Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Proverbs 16:24
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14
In both these verses, words are described as being powerful. In the first verse they are sweetness to the soul and healthy for the body. And in the second words come from the heart and it is being asked that they be pleasing to the Lord. There is connection between words, our inner self (heart/soul) and with the Spirit (the Lord). Hmm… the power of words.
The old adage, “Stick and Stones my break my bones, but words will never hurt me…” biggest lie in the books. It is a defense against words spoken as arrows. Arrows that then penetrated the heart causing pain. But if we say this- then we can pretend that the words don’t matter, when in reality they do. You know exactly what I am talking about, you have experienced it yourself I bet. There is still a “reel” that plays in your head of someone saying such an “arrow” towards you. We don’t have to let it live there and take up space, we can heal and replace that “reel” with true words, such as a verse that is uplifting “I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine.” “I have been saved through grace.” There are so many.
The opposite is true as well- sweet words spoken over us by those who truly care and love us, make us feel good, eases the heart, comforts the soul, brings peace, builds self-confidence. You know what I am talking about here too. Who is one person that has been in your corner, that has encouraged you in your toughest moments? What words kept the candle of hope alive in your soul when it was about to go out? We tend to forget these words and phrases more easily then the above fiery arrows although they are what has provided us with strength to keep going.
If this is how powerful our words can be to each other than how much more powerful are Gods words/thoughts towards us. The Word of God is a living document. This means the words in His Word impact our hearts like no other in history. God speaks through them like “arrows of love” penetrating the heart, hitting the target. But instead of pain, they bring comfort, joy, encouragement and love. They heal our heart like nothing else can. His words supply a peace that passes ALL understanding. He is our Rock and Redeemer. THIS is where our meditation needs to lie, not on the lies that we have held onto of others. HIS truth is where our focus needs to be so they can rule in our hearts and minds, bringing sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
So, here is the challenge, how are we ensuring our words and the meditations of our hearts are acceptable to the Lord as He is our Rock and Redeemer? Then secondly, who are we sharing these encouraging soul saving words with spreading His sweetness, joy and everlasting love.
Dear Lord Thank you for loving us so deeply and so authentically that You are able to penetrate our hearts with Your word, Your loving kindness and Your understanding. When we don’t have the words to pray, you understand our groanings. We all have, well at least I have and still do struggle with negative words in my head from when I was young and lies stuck. When the doubts arise and these words are strong, be my strength. Remind me of how You see me and who you made me to be. Remind me that I am a child of the Most High God. I am a Daughter of the King, I was knit together in my mothers womb, fearfully and wonderfully made. You have given me meaning and a purpose. You provide blessings and joy. Thank you Abba for your never ending love for me. AMEN.
